Farming for Dwarf Fortress beginners

If you're returning to Dwarf Fortress after a long sabbatical or are curious about the long-standing game now that it's had a massive facelift, farming is an element to gameplay that can be a little confusing for unfamiliar players. Below, we detail the easiest ways to farm in Dwarf Fortress so you can begin supplying your fortress with everything it needs right off of the bat.

Easiest way to farm in Dwarf Fortress

How to farm

In order to begin farming, you're going to need a Farm Plot. Dwarves don't need a ton of food or drink in order to survive, so we'd recommend starting out with a 6x6 lot. Any fortress inhabitants with the Farming labor assigned to them will work to clear the plot and prepare for planting. Make sure that there's at least one dwarf who has this task assigned to them.

You'll need to assign crops to each season. The crops that are available for planting change based on whether the farm plot is above or below ground, so plan accordingly. If you're a first time player, we'd recommend staying away from garden plants for awhile until you have a good grasp on how to manage in-game gardening – some garden plants have seasonal requirements in order to successfully grow.

Once the crops are fully grown it'll be time to harvest. All dwarves can help harvest the fields. Once the plant is harvested, your dwarves will then take the produce to the correct stockpile. You can increase your crop production if you have highly skilled farmers and have used fertilizer.

Make sure to move harvested crops to the correct stockpile. If you don't, the crops that are left will wither and rot away, leaving all of your hard work for nothing.
